The Cannon Falls Food Shelf's roots go back to the fall of 1982, when Boyd Nelson - pastor of the community's First English Lutheran Church - received a 100-pound sack of potatoes from a church member. The donation came shortly before Thanksgiving, and spurred Pastor Nelson into action. He called a list-minute Church Council meeting that only three members were able to attend. Those three wrote personal checks to cover the purchase of five turkeys and the other food items necessary to provide an entire Thanksgiving meal for families Nelson knew were facing difficult times.
When Pastor Nelson went to purchase the needed groceries at the Cannon Falls Red Owl, the local grocer not only filled his entire shopping list, he told Nelson to keep the donated funds to meet other food needs. The generosity evidenced that Thanksgiving led the First English congregation to commit to continuing to provide food support for needy area residents.
Today, the Cannon Falls Food Shelf is still located in the lower level of the First English Lutheran Church - and it has grown from serving five families at Thanksgiving to serving more than 300 households annually. In 2014, the Food Shelf - when now operates as a separate entity supported by the Cannon Falls community as a whole - served an average of 164 households (representing 476 individuals) each month.
